Fresh Picks: Icona Pop

Fresh Picks: Icona Pop

By Ryan Inkley

Icona Pop may hardly be a fresh pick on an international scale, but for us here enjoying the U.S. of A., we may be ignorant to the potential of this power duo. Best friends Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo met at one of Hjelt’s parties and have been writing music and singing together ever since.

The two twentysomethings are known for their voices as well as their appearance. Bright colors. Bright lights. Flashy outfits and tattoos. Check out their video for “Manners” after the break to see evidence of that.

Maybe you’ve heard the song. Or maybe you have heard the remix “Mind Your Manners” featuring Chiddy Bang throwing down some sick flow to a sped up version with the girls. Either way, it’s time they get some attention. Your attention. And they are not asking politely for it. On their track they almost braggingly say,

“Manners

Take a second look and you’ll see

There is no one like me

Manners

You better reconsider

’cause you will never do better

There is no one like me”

Yikes. No one may even be like them and you better know it. This seems to be their attitude. Look at their other tracks, “Nights Like This,” “Lovers to Friends,” and “Sun Goes Down” to get a better feel for what they are singing. But their “f you” attitude is never more prevalent and obvious than on their new track, “I Love It.” The recurring line in the song is, “I don’t care. I love it.” What don’t they care about exactly? The better question is: what do they care about?

Here’s the music video for the radically catchy song. Be careful, there are a few mild swear words. I apologize for them. I guarantee they don’t care, though.

When do you get to hear more from these girls? The album is slated to come out this fall. So prepare now. Listen in. Love their music. Because there is a storm coming this fall in the form of two bright-color-dressed chicks and you better love what they’re gonna drop.
